Warts and all
Article Abstract:
The numbers of men, women and children contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are increasing each year, and this could be fuelling the spread of HIV. A survey suggests that safer sex is not being practiced and that sexual satisfaction is more important than concerns about STIs or HIV. The most common bacterial STI in the UK is chlamydia trachomatis, which, if left untreated, can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Sexual health check-ups at a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic is recommended.

Challenging assumptions
Article Abstract:
Nurse education should include training in sexual health matters. Sexual health includes prevention of disease and the promotion of positive attitudes. Students should examine the nature and influence of sexuality. They can explore their own attitudes through workshop sessions. Education should emphasise tolerance as prejudice limits holistic patient care. Education in sexual health will encourage nurses' self-confidence in dealing with the concerns of patients.
