Weight on our minds: Discrimination against fat people is leading to child suicides and shoving patients who are obese to the bottom of waiting lists
Article Abstract:
When Christina Corrigan died aged 13 weighing 48 stones it was assumed that overeating was the cause of death. It was concluded that she died from congestive heart failure due to morbid obesity, although there was no internal autopsy. A psychologist treating eating disorders Deborah Burghard, believes that there is such a fear of fat that there is a desire to control it, or get rid of it. It has been speculated that the rise in eating disorders is due to the current fashion for emaciated models in magazines.
