What makes a person
Article Abstract:
The High Court decision to terminate the feeding of persistent vegetative state patient, Anthony Bland raises ethical problems. The Law Lords failed to rule whether Bland was alive or dead. They should have determined whether he was still a person and whether withdrawal of feeding constituted murder. They admitted possible fallibility on ethical issues. They recognised the ethical dilemma for nurses but their decision ignored nursing values. Termination of feeding contradicts the principles of nursing. Nurses should participate in the subsequent Parliamentary review.

A test of ethics
Article Abstract:
Testing for HIV in blood that has been taken from the patient for other purposes has raised legal and ethical issues. It is seen as quite legal for blood to be tested for HIV without telling the patient, as long as the blood is used in tests for which consent has been given. However, there is a danger that nurses may be the subject of legal action if blood is tested without the patient's consent. Patients must be made aware that their blood may be screened for HIV, and have the right to withhold consent.

Community nurses take on the task of selling themselves
Article Abstract:
Organisational changes in the United Kingdom National Health Service has altered the employment position of community nurses who may now find they have to justify their role in order to be able to practice. Those in financial control of health funding may not recognize all the duties that a community nurse performs whilst in the home of a patient. It is therefore vital for these nurses to show how effective they are as nursing practitioners.
