Article Abstract:
Nursing Development Units are the instruments of change and improved nursing practice. Since their introduction in 1982 they have emphasised the practical application of research. They publicise success and failure so that all aspects of nursing may benefit. In 1992 300 NDUs exist in all fields. Their work covers routine nursing procedures as well as innovative therapies. Some fear the future of NDUs is threatened without a formal remit. However, others believe prescribing their activities could limit their effectiveness. Formal accreditation could preserve the concept.

Protecting the species
Article Abstract:
The title of nursing development units (NDUs) should only be awarded to units which truly merit it, and have undergone strict selection. There is the fear that other less deserving units could acquire the title, thus lowering the status. The King's Fund programme for NDUs selects units carefully before awarding funds. The project aims to disseminate good practice and innovate, rather than creating an elitist practice. However, there is no quality monitor which is independent, so a chief executive could entice purchasers with the title, then drop the title afterwards.

Survival of the fittest
Article Abstract:
Nurses must prove their value to ensure their place in a reformed National Health Service. Jobs may be threatened by the emphasis on cost-effectiveness. Education Project 2000 has addressed changing needs in student training. Practicing nurses can update skills through post-registration training. Nurse managers and teachers should demonstrate management skills and clinical awareness.
