With scores still infected, India declares leprosy 'eliminated'
Article Abstract:
Indian health minister Anbumani Ramadoss announced on 30 January 2006, that the country has eliminated leprosy with number of people with leprosy dropped from 149,000 in April 2005 to 107,000 in December 2005 making a prevalence of 0.95 per 10,000 people. Government officials admit that complete eradication is likely to take at least 20 more years but, experts and field workers are skeptical even about the reported elimination and caution that premature announcement could lead to complacency.

Biomass fuels blamed for premature deaths in rural settings
Article Abstract:
The indoor pollution in rural households caused by burning biomass and coal over primitive stoves is found to be deadlier than the outdoor pollution found in urban areas. Pneumonia in children, chronic lung disease in women, tuberculosis, heart diseases, blindness, cataract, immune and metabolic changes and still births are some of the diseases that are associated with the indoor pollution caused by burning cheap biomass fuels.

Encephalitis outbreak finds Indian officials unprepared
Article Abstract:
The lack of preparedness by the Indian health officials have led to a spiraling outbreak of Japanese encephalitis in India characterized by fever, loss of consciousness and seizures. The lack of preventive measures undertaken by government has led for free breeding grounds for mosquitoes that transmit the virus from pigs to humans.
