Wound cleansing: by the patient or carer at home
Article Abstract:
Nurses can give information to patients and carers about the cleansing and management of small wounds. Using iodine to clean wounds has gone out of favour as it can lead to renal failure with long term use. Antiseptics can cause resistant bacteria to appear and some, such as Savlon, do not work if mixed with soap or blood. The best policy is to run the wound under running water, apply saline solution, or try the ancient Egyptian remedy of honey. This is acidic and prevents bacterial growth. A related article on natural remedies is included.

Antiseptics in wound healing
Article Abstract:
Trials in the use of antiseptics as part of the treatment for injury, ulceration or as pre-surgical skin preparation have shown that their use may be limited. Antiseptics are less damaging to the body than other types of bacteria cleansers but resistance from bacteria is growing. Whenever antiseptics are used their potency is lost very quickly suggesting that bandages with long-lasting antiseptics within them may be a better solution. Antiseptics used with antibiotics and applied directly to the skin are found to be more successful.

The stigma of smell
Article Abstract:
The presence of unpleasant smells from a fungating wound can be very disturbing for the patient, and presents particular challenges for the nurses involved in that person's care. The care management strategy must focus on improving the patient's quality of life, giving attention to which type of dressing or treatment is most acceptable to the patient. Appropriate treatment, which can include metronidazole, can make a great improvement to the patient's mental health.
