Flu researcher Yoshihiro Kawaoka engineered a method to generate entire viruses from genetic sequences, a technology that is used to make flu vaccines. Kawaoka is a fiercely productive flu researcher, juggling dual appointments at the University of Tokyo's prestigious Institute for Medical Sciences and at University of Wisconsin at Madison, and turning out top-notch work at both institutions.

The US National Institutes of Health is supposed to flow $315 million more into HIV vaccine research by the year 2012. Researches have applied to head a virtual center, christened the Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI) that is developed to get the answers to intractable questions about vaccines for AIDS.
