Young and vulnerable: Nurses at Southampton University vaccinated 8,000 students after meningitis killed three students last year
Article Abstract:
Students at Southampton University are being requested to acquire a vaccination for meningitis before they arrive for the new term, in an attempt to prevent a further meningitis outbreak, when three students died. The most likely carriers of meningococci are those aged between 15-24, and the bacteria thrive in overcrowded, dry and smoky areas. The Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals has called on universities to put emergency action plans in place, and increase awareness amongst staff and students.

Screen breaks
Article Abstract:
Public interest in the medical profession has driven the trend for television programme makers to produce series which follow the daily lifes of nurses and doctors working in several large hospitals throughout the UK. The nurses featured in such programmes have little experience of working with television crews, and can sometimes feel they have been portrayed in a negative light. Film makers try to be as unobtrusive as possible, allowing nurses to get on with their day to day jobs.

Break the smack habit
Article Abstract:
The UK government is to begin a consultation exercise on the law relating to the smacking of children. The existing law allows parents to use reasonable physical punishments to discipline their children. An alliance of campaigners, which includes the Health Visitors' Association and the Royal College of General Practitioners, is keen to see all forms of corporal punishment made illegal, which would afford children the same rights as adults concerning assault.
