Women need to understand that menstruation patterns can be normal and sometimes disrupted. Disruptions in the normal cycle are caused by stress, exercise, illness, travel and weight gain. Normal menstruation lasts from two to eight days, 21 days or more than 35 days apart, has a watery or light-colored flow, and can cause cramping.
