Eric Foner, the DeWitt Clinton Professor of history at Columbia University in New York, has explored the different ways in which Americans experience and think about freedom, which he believes have much to do with the legacy of racial inequality left by slavery. He co-curated two museum exhibitions focusing on the Civil war period and served as a historical consultant for several National Parks Service sites and museums.
