Elements of design: symmetry
Article Abstract:
Humans have a natural love of symmetry. In gardens symmetry is a person's way of arranging nature, of controlling it. When perfect symmetry is not found, its subtler form balance, is adhered to. Each object or form on one side has a balancing, but not identical, form on the other.

Gardens, like people, age. The young garden has a different character than the old. The life cycle of a garden is characterized more by subtraction than addition as the various species compete for light and space.
