Paint offers the best protection for wood outdoors. Latex paint is better than oil-based based because it allows water vapor to pass through more freely. Clear finishes for decks are hard to repair once they peel, so the best option is to use redwood heartwood and to leave it unfinished.

The correct sandpaper will give a smooth finish to lacquer, varnish, or polyurethane. Papers with grits of 180 to 400 are recommended for sanding first coats. Grits of up to 600 are recommended for final coats.
