Hand tools: innovations drive interest, but standbys drive sales
Article Abstract:
Innovative measuring products that integrate ultrasonic and digital technology attract consumers' interest, but most shoppers still prefer standard rulers. Hand tool manufacturers developed neon-colored tape measures with lighter housings made of plastic to better meet contractors' needs, but the traditional 1-in-by-25-ft tape measure is still the bestseller. Contractors prefer big boxes and hardware stores over wholesale suppliers when purchasing hand tools.

Power tools: detail sanders attract with convenience, price points
Article Abstract:
Detail sanders constitute one of the newest and fastest growing power tools on the market. The reason for the popularity of detail sanders are their ease of use, convenience and functionality, in addition to cost. According to manufacturers Ryobi North American Inc, about 700,000 detail sanders were sold in 1995 alone. Some note that available sanders, such as belt sanders and random orbit sanders are not as effective as detail sanders.
