Help home buyers see the value of owning their own
Article Abstract:
Home center stores' existence could be threatened if the trend of younger families to rent rather than buy homes continues. Although the home center stores would have difficulty in combatting the socio-economic fears that have developed the trend, they can contribute to and support such organizations as the Habitat for Humanity and the National Association of Realtors' Housing Needs Committee who encourage and sponsor home ownership and home building and repair. Some stores may be able to sponsor a community program to encourage home ownership.

Yesterday's home luxuries are today's expectations
Article Abstract:
A survey by the National Assn of Home Builders (NAHB) says that while homebuyers may be too busy to use all the amenities and luxuries in a new home, they still want it. The survey notes that consumers no longer think of such amenities as jet-spray tubs, cathedral ceilings and kitchen islands as extras. NAHB official Gopal Ahluwalia sees an irony in the fact that although the restaurant industry says that more people are eating out than before, prospective homebuyers still want nice kitchens with all amenities in it.

Security concerns boost safe sales; consumers like them for fire-protection and convenience
Article Abstract:
Safes have become an important segment for home improvement retailers who have gradually increased their share of home-sized sales over the past few years. Some estimates note that about 20-25% of the $82 million worth of safes sold in 1995 at home improvement stores went to home consumers. This development has made home improvement stores the second leading seller of safes, next to office-supply retailers. The growth in the sale of safes to consumers has been attributed to convenience and fire protection.
