A new twist on child care
Article Abstract:
Transamerica Life Companies of Los Angeles has developed an innovative program to reduce absenteeism caused by working parents who must take time off from work when their children become ill. A survey conducted by Transamerica revealed that the company was losing between $150,000 to $180,000 annually because of this problem. Transamerica, in a joint venture with California Medical Center - Los Angeles, sponsored a day care center for mildly ill children. Under the agreement, the hospital leased 15 beds to Transamerica, and set aside a day care area in the hospital for the children of Transamerica's employees. A nurse and a teacher are always at the facility, and children are screened by a doctor for infectious diseases before they are permitted to stay.

A united front against AIDS
Article Abstract:
Over 30 guilds, unions, and other organizations associated with the theater in New York City have formed Broadway Cares (BC), a project designed to help people with AIDS. Also participating in BC are the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting; three major theater owner-operators; program publisher Playbill; and the New York Drama Critics Circle. BC is partly a reflection of the fact that the entertainment industry is especially hard hit by the AIDS epidemic.
