Align HR to serve the customer
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of a human resources (HR) department rests on its being aligned with its customers' needs. The HR department of Chevron Chemical Co. developed a unique and effective system for HR alignment, comprised of three main stages: identifying customer requirements for and satisfaction with HR products; benchmarking the HR department against an ideal; and translating this ideal into a prioritized achievement plan. The first step is considerably facilitated by the Customer Needs Assessment, a measurement tool that identifies, prioritizes and evaluates HR products and services. This data is, in turn, useful in the second stage in comparing the status quo with what the HR department wants to achieve. The third stage requires the planning of tasks and the allocation of resources to fulfill specific customer needs, a process called funneling.

Four factors lower disability rates
Article Abstract:
Studies of chronic disability resulting from workplace injuries and illnesses have identified four human resource policy variables that help minimize such disabilities. These variables are the existence and use of procedures for conflict and grievance resolution, policies promoting work force stability and continuity, degree of employee participation in management and disability policies that emphasize early support for employees chronically disabled by injuries or illnesses.
