Compaq's relo program goes the extra mile
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp's belief that its workers are responsible for the success of the company led it to establish the Relocation Policy and Support Program with employee satisfaction as its priority. The key areas of the relocation program include familiarizing employees with their new area; providing support for spouses; and providing support for children. To assist its employees in becoming familiar with their new areas, the company established the Relocation Homefinding-Resource Center. The center provides information about such things as housing, utilities, and restaurants. Support for spouses includes spousal assistance outside the firm; a career center and computer; and spouse network. The support programs for children include kid kits, day care, and school information.

A viable travel policy limits expenses
Article Abstract:
Firms interested in improving the way employee expenses are handled may achieve positive results by establishing travel policies because the procedures help to monitor costs. Effective travel policies should include guidelines and standards for business entertainment and travel practices, instructions on expense reporting and documentation, and guidelines for placing reservations. To be effective, however, firms need to make sure policies have the support of management, and meetings should be held to inform employees about the policies. A sample travel policy is presented to illustrate aspects of developing travel policy procedures.
