Austria: a progress report on pensions
Article Abstract:
Austria has come a long way in the pension funds business. The remarkable progress in the pensions area was the direct result of two pension laws that were enacted in Jun 1990 and a small revolt that occurred in Austria. One of the major changes happened in the Parliament as its members shifted from the pay-as-you-go final salary pension system to a funded defined contribution arrangement. The popularity of pensions funds may be attributed to provisions for outside funding, an off-balance-sheet approach and exemption from personal income taxes.

Establishing an employee benefits reinsurance captive
Article Abstract:
Companies that intend to restructure their employee benefit plans may employ the services of a captive insurance company. The system employed by R.J. Reynolds became the basis for the analysis of an employee benefits plan. The recognition of risk exposure should be of primary concern when embarking on this venture. Management of these risks can be made easier by negotiating down administration fees and investing reserves and cash flow at a higher rate of return.

Investment
Article Abstract:
The main investment issues related to the supplementary corporate pension systems in France are examined. These are the traditional insured benefit plans which include defined benefit plans and defined contributions plans, and the company savings/profit-sharing plans such as the Plans d'epargne d'enterprise (PEEs). The trends showed that PEEs are attracting interests as a result of the absence of funded pension arrangements.
