Awareness effort puts diversity in the news
Article Abstract:
The Seattle Times Co. was given the Personnel Journal Optimas Award for managing change. One of the main business challenges resulting from changing workforce demographics is increasing diversity. Firms whose businesses rely on a multicultural workforce should learn to manage this change. As a newspaper catering to a community 20% of which is made up of minorities, The Seattle Times recognized the need to provide objective information to these audiences through reports made by member of those populations. To support this goal, the newspaper has instituted policies and systems to hire and retain staff from diverse cultures. Other diversity initiatives included a representative diversity committee that meets regularly to discuss diversity issues and a content audit of stories and photographs to ensure cultural fairness and sensitivity. The human resource department of the newspaper plays an important but changing role in these initiatives.

Intel brings TQM to the business of education
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp. was given the 1995 Personnel Journal Optimas Award for partnership. The Santa Clara, CA-Based semiconductor manufacturer was recognized for its partnership initiatives with an Arizona school that resulted in the transfer of total quality management concepts to the educational sphere. This initiative is in keeping with the firm's goal to help improve communities in which it has operations. One such area was Chandler, AZ, where the Kyrene School District planned to build an elementary school on land partly owned by Intel. Instead of accepting the school district's purchase offer, the company donated the land under the condition that Intel would be involved with the school's development. This resulted in a partnership that allowed the school to benefit from Intel's expertise and technology, as well as provided the firm's local employees with a good educational alternative.

Diversity keeps newspaper up with the times
Article Abstract:
An American Society of Newspaper Editors survey reveals that only 10.91% of the total number of workers in America's newsrooms belong to minority groups and that 46% of the country's daily newspaper companies have no minority employees at all. This, despite the fact that minorities now account for nearly a quarter of the total US population. Fortunately, many of the country's major newspapers are recognizing the need to keep up with the changing demographics of their readership. One newspaper company that is leading in this effort is The Seattle TimesCo. In line with its philosophy of 'pluralism,' the firm's workforce now consists of 21% non-whites and 33% women, while its newsroom comprises of 21% minorityreporters and editors and 44% women. In addition, The Seattle Times offers diversity training, diversity newsletter, a diversity council and other similar initiatives.
