Bargaining for skills: Trade Unions and training at the workplace
Article Abstract:
The new bargaining agenda outlined by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) features training and development as key issues. There are few studies examining the influence of union involvement on training outcomes, although evidence indicates that union success in claiming a role in training decisions in the workplace have been limited. A survey of members and representatives from the Manufacturing Science and Finance union demonstrates that involvement by unions in training decisions is linked to superior training and outcomes in the workplace.

The Swedish model: relevant for other European countries?
Article Abstract:
The Swedish model of policy for regulating the labour market is an illustration that intervention can help solve unemployment, and an alternative to policies involving liberalising the labour market in order to promote flexibility. The debate on flexibility is linked to supply-side economics, which became fashionable from the end of the 1970s. The conventional view was that the US offers more solutions than Europe, which is over-regulated. However, the Swedish model combines both intervention and a good record on unemployment.
