Basic principles of nonqualified deferred compensation
Article Abstract:
A number of companies are now opting to give nonqualified deferred pension plans to executives. With the changes in the Tax Code limiting retirement benefits from the conventional qualified plans by as much as 20%, companies have increasingly turned to nonqualified compensation packages. Under the nonqualified system, the employer is unable to deduct contributions until benefits are taxed from the employees. Qualified deferred compensation plans may include 401 (k) supplemental plans, voluntary deferred compensation plans and the supplemental executive retirement plans.

Qualified medical child support orders: commentary
Article Abstract:
Qualified medical child support orders (QMCSO) provide health care benefits to children of plan participants who would otherwise be disqualified from coverage, such as children born out of wedlock and those not residing with their parents. The lack of Dept. of Labor guidelines for QMCSO administration has led to several complications. For example, questions arise on whether to grant interim coverage to an alternate recipient before QMCSO qualification and whether to use preexisting condition limitations to named QMCSO alternate recipients.

Voluntary deferred compensation plans: trends and issues in plan design
Article Abstract:
Employees eligible to receive retirement benefits need to examine thoroughly the benefits derived from deferred compensation schemes. Personal investment objectives should be taken into consideration. On the other hand, employers should also consider the financial results of company deferral plans. An employee may choose to put off cash compensation into a voluntary deferral scheme to delay taxation until such time that the tax bracket is lowered. Some employees choose the deferred compensation plan for capital accumulation.
