Beating a stacked deck - restructuring vs. career development
Article Abstract:
Career development programs are in some ways even more important during corporate reorganizations than during periods of growth. Corporate restructuring can lead to low employee morale and confusion. Career development counseling during a restructuring can help employees understand possible opportunities and re-evaluate their career plans without raising unrealistic expectations. The career guidance program under such conditions should emphasize information sharing rather than skill building or career path tracking. Diagnostic interviews with a cross-section of the employees should be used to identify the employees' main areas of concern. Counseling workshops should emphasize the employees' responsibility for their own career planning, the options available to the employees, and tailoring the program to the needs of the organization.

Technical managers mismanaged: Turnover or turnaround?
Article Abstract:
Technical experts who are promoted to management positions often fail as managers because they lack the skills in communication and personal relationships needed to be good managers. Technical managers tend to fall back on technical approaches to problem solving that have worked for them in the past. The human resources department can alleviate this problem by helping technicians understand the management side of a supervisory position. Human resources personnel should train the new technical manager thoroughly. The human resources department should also assist the new technical manager in reviewing the personnel he will be supervising. The manager's performance should be regularly evaluated by personnel from human resources.
