Matching worked hours to business needs
Article Abstract:
Many sectors of British industry are introducing innovative working hours with an 'annual-hours' approach, in which the time period within which full-time employees must work their contractual hours is defined over a whole year and not by the week. A company can then appraise the costs and benefits of efficiency and increased productivity without the constraints of conventional work weeks. The annual-hours approach prompts the growth of six-crew systems in continuous process industries and reaches its full potential in companies with cyclical or seasonal peaks. Volatile, unpredictable businesses, such as the German retail sector, have experimented with a 'flexiyear' with no committed hours but with strong commission incentives for sales staff to work hours when the customer demand is highest.

A critical assessment of RVQ
Article Abstract:
The British government's investigating committee known as the Working Group on Vocational Qualifications has issued a report recommending 'radical changes' of laws related to employee evaluations. This would be accomplished by formalizing the qualifications for various vocational positions throughout the country. The report seeks to implement a national policy governing certifications for jobs, which would be administered by the National Council for Vocational Qualifications. The five primary concerns of the report and five levels of vocational qualification discussed in the report are analyzed in detail. The report proposes the establishment of 'industry bodies' to assess employee competence levels and to develop qualification standards for each vocation.
