The IPM's new flexible route to learning
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) has developed a flexible learning program that permits student members to obtain modular credits in key areas of specialization on their way to obtaining the IPM qualification. This new flexible learning program is competence-focused and encourages students to apply what they learn within their own organizations. It also requires the completion of a foundation course on general management prior to the start of studies on the different aspects of personnel management. The flexible learning program encourages peer support by organizing students in small tutor-assisted groups that are expected to set their own learning standards. The program also provides students the convenience associated with a distance learning course since it mixes tutor support with the use of home-study materials that stress open learning techniques.

The key role of the line manager in employee development
Article Abstract:
Many British business managers score poorly in the area of human resource management. In general, they are apathetic to the further training and development of their subordinates. Few managers are properly trained to appraise the performance of their employees and to communicate effectively with them. To remedy the problem, top management must formally incorporate people management as part of the job description of middle and lower management. Top management must also provide all managers with the skills of appraising staff performance and developing staff training policies.
