Article Abstract:
The Personnel Journal awarded its 1992 Optimas Award in the Quality of Life category to Waterburg, VT-based Ben and Jerry's Homemade Inc. The award was handed out to the ice cream making company in recognition of its efforts to develop a supporting environment for employees. Founded in 1978, founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield have emphasized the importance of fun while working and have encouraged unrestricted expression of opinions in the workplace. Furthermore, the company follows the principles of linked prosperity and practices profit sharing, providing its employees with the most desirable benefits and compensation in Vermont. Regular meetings are also held among workers, managers and founders and advisory groups are established to determine the sentiment of employees on several key issues. Aside from providing employees with a supportive environment, Ben and Jerry's also promotes social responsibility on the local, national and global level.

Expert advice on how to move forward with change
Article Abstract:
Leading human resource professionals have been asked for their opinions on the trend towards corporate change and how it can be effectively managed. They agree that formal change management programs should be developed by companies planning to implement changes. They cite organization-wide commitment as a major challenge in managing change. They point to trust as a component of corporate culture that should exist in an organization before long-term change can be implemented and maintained. Among the tools they cited as important in managing change are flexibility, adaptability, knowledge of the business and well-honed human relations skills. They also pointed to the harnessing of employee energy as a vital factor in enhancing organizational change.
