The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 are seen as open to interpretation, with examples of weakness cited by the trade unions. Changes in the diagram of a suitable operators' chair have caused confusion and the eyecare provision argues that display screens do not harm the eyes although it details optical assessment and safeguards.

EC announces health and safety action programme
Article Abstract:
The new health and safety programme announced by the European Commission will focus more on better information than legislation, particularly to meet the needs of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). A specific programme, Safety Actions for Europe will target SMEs, using best practices to develop a safe, productive and competitive work environment.
