Creating market conditions for the delivery of health care: the Cincinnati experience
Article Abstract:
The supermarket chain Kroger Co. was able to obtain new, important tools for assessing health care coverage as a result of significant developments in Cincinnati, OH. Since 1991, the company has been selecting health care based on such factors as market competitiveness, operating costs and scientifically acceptable and statistically proven measures of quality and clinical outcomes of different health care providers. Kroger formed a coalition with Cincinnati Bell, General Electric Aircraft Engine and Procter and Gamble to enable them to assess the quality outcomes and cost efficiences of hospitals in the area. As a result, the hospitals took it upon themselves to improve their services. Kroger has now become a better educated consumer and payer, and good employer to its employees.
