Creativity can extend resources
Article Abstract:
US companies can take part in the rebuilding of the nation by a little imagination. Examples of creative programs that are contributing to the rebuilding process include Prestige Cleaners's offer of free dry cleaning services to unemployed people to help them look good for their job interviews. Marriot Corp for its part donates food and other nonperishable goods to the needy. Similarly, Gentlemen's Quarterly annually holds its Clothing Collective program to solicit clothing donations which go to job-training programs and homeless shelters. Executive search firm Gilbert Tweed Assoc Inc's innovative program involved donating its services to non-profit organizations. The firm awarded a pro bono search assignment for a senior-level executive and a free on-site consulting session on recruitment to organizations chosen through a lottery system. Patagonia Inc has its 'Coat of Many Colors' project whose aim is to produce coats made of scraps for disadvantaged children.

HR Soviet style (human resources)(First Person) (Interview)
Article Abstract:
ITT Community Development Corp VP of employee relations Thomas Bailey gives his observations about the state of human resources management (HR) practices in the Soviet Union and compares these with current practices in the US based on his trip to the Soviet Union as a speaker-participant in the Citizen Ambassador Program. In his visit to the Soviet Union, Bailey saw unemployment as one of the main human resources issues that confront Soviets. Women play a critical role in the Soviet work force since they comprise 56% of the total work force. Inefficiency was observed in Soviet assembly processes, in which the lack of technological innovation could be attributed to the state's focus on the upgrade of Soviet military capabilities. The Soviet government, labor, and industrial sectors gave a favorable response to Bailey's attitudes of Soviet HR and showed curiosity in American techniques.

Trust of telecommuter tested
Article Abstract:
Readers of Personnel Journal were invited to comment on a case of a telecommuter who was always late in returning calls from the office. The employee's excuses for his inability to return calls prompty always seemed valid and his performance remained satisfactory. Because of these, his colleagues were unwilling to check up on him even though they fear that he was having problems. Since the issue seems to be the employee's availability, one reader suggested that the company provide the employee with a beeper. Another reader proposed that the employee should be oriented by his manager on telephone etiquette. It should be explained to the employee that returning calls immediately is good business practice and that checking up on telecommuters is necessary since the telecommuting program is still relatively new and needs to be perfected.
