Director disqualified after quarry safety conviction

A Health and Safety Executive inspector served Chapman Chalk Supplies Ltd in Jevington, UK with a prohibition notice due to a danger from rock falls. Rodney Chapman, a director of the company, was prosecuted under Section 37 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was subsequently fined 5,000 pounds sterling. He was also disqualified for two years from being a company director under the provisions of the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986. The Act was primarily intended to curb financial wrongdoings by company directors.

Large industrial complexes are difficult to monitor for safety. One group of researchers are developing a computer system called FORMENTOR which uses artificial intelligence. Another group are looking at assessing safety in such plants by using knowledge of the buildings.
