Discrimination against Latino job applicants: a controlled experiment
Article Abstract:
Employment testing is used to study discrimination in hiring in the Washington, D.C. area. The method involves the simultaneous approach for the same job of two applicants having similar qualifications, one of whom is a member of a racial minority. Bias against male and female Latino applicants as compared to their Anglo counterparts is measured. The results indicate that discrimination is pronounced if the Latino applicant is male and if the job applied for is white-collar, does not require a college degree, and is located in the central city. Nevertheless, 80% of the employers tested responded in a non-discriminatory fashion. The testing method can be used by human resource managers to examine discrimination within their own companies, as well as for public advocacy.

Are Affirmative Action Hires Less Qualified? Evidence from Employer-Employee Data on New Hires
Article Abstract:
This study suggests that minorities or women hired under Affirmative Action programs may be less qualified than their fellow employees. However, critics of Affirmative Action may be concentrating too narrowly on certain qualifications that measure job performance. Research indicates that minorities and women compensate for shortcomings in education and job skills.
