Diversity in space
Article Abstract:
Mary Lozano and Clifford Wong have developed a questionnaire for determining important cultural issues to be addressed in the planning and management of a multinational space station program. Topics covered by the questionnaire include cultural issues relating to decision-making, language, privacy, personal habits and personal concerns regarding food, humor and equipment. The study is intended for determining initial ethnological information regarding participants to a multination space program. The space station division of McDonnell Douglas Corp is designing the space station Freedom which is expected to be launched by 1995. Participants from the US, Japan, Europe and Canada will reside in the station from 90 to 120 days. It is hoped that study results, integrated into crew operati ons training, would alleviate psychological problems and reduce costs.

Manugistics tests its values
Article Abstract:
Manugistics Inc developed the Elements of Excellence to set out its corporate goals and values. The Elements of Excellence stated the company's commitment to doing to others what it wanted others to do to it, to the belief that support and cooperation with clients promote product development and to the valuation of team success over personal glory. A quarterly awards program and a personnel training program were enacted to provide substance to the corporate statement. The software development company's values were tested during its acquisition of a competing firm in 1990 and its decision to reduce employee work force by 13% in the period immediately before the Gulf War. Comprehensive personnel support as well as active and immediate communications between personnel and management enabled the company to surpass its problems and maintain its values.

Another leap forward for HR
Article Abstract:
The current trend of corporate reorganization provides the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the importance of effective human resources management (HRM). The economic recession and corporate downsizing need not be blamed for corporate ills that can be remedied through HRM. HRM must assume management responsibilities and authorities to fully exploit personnel capabilities for improving productivity. Some available paradigms for achieving this include teams, total quality management, diversity and empowerment. This necessitates that HRM be elevated to the management level from the previous support level and would require leaders willing to take risks and possessing visionary capabilities. Personnel managers should therefore take a more active stand in helping their organizations achieve theirobjectives through improved personnel performance.
