Personnel's role in a management buyout
Article Abstract:
Personnel department involvement is important during management buyouts, especially in maintaining the commitment of the work force. The experience of Premier Brands in taking over the Cadbury Schweppes food and beverages business in 1986 is used to illustrate the type of challenges in this type of endeavor. The main 'change' messages received by the new employees were that profitability had to be restored, that fixed assets were to be cut by sales or leasebacks, and that discretionary spending would be pared to the minimum. Employees responded favorably, and there was no backlash against Cadbury. Clarity of purpose and training activities are identified as two key factors in a successful change program.
