Employment, Earnings and Hours, Upstate Areas
Article Abstract:
Total nonagricultural employment for one Upstate area of New York was 334,000 persons. Over 50,000 persons worked in the manufacturing sector in the Albany- Schenectady-Troy area. Half that number worked in nondurable goods. In the Binghamton area, which includes Broome and Tioga counties in New York and Susquehanna county in Pennsylvania, there were over 116,000 total nonagricultural workers. Two-thirds of these workers were in the nonmanufacturing sector. Statistical data is featured in tables for those upstate divisions, as well as the Buffalo area, the Elmira area and the Poughkeepsie area for September and October of 1983.

The New York Upstate area includes Albany, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties; total nonagricultural employment there was 331,000 persons in September 1983. This was 5,000 persons less than a year before. Total nonagricultural employment in the Binghamton area was 115,000 persons in September 1983. The Elmira area had a total of 33,000 workers in nonagricultural sectors. The Buffalo area had 450,000 jobs in September of 1983, which was about the same total employment as September 1982. Data for the Rochester, Syracuse, Utica-Rome, Monroe County and Poughkeepsie areas is featured in extensive tables.

Total nonagricultural employment in the Albany- Schenectady-Troy area, which includes Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga, Rensselaer, and Montgomery counties, was 330,000 persons in June of 1983. Manufacturing accounted for 51,000 of those jobs. Government, service and wholesale and retail industries were the leading employment sectors in that region. Total nonagricultural employment in Erie and Niagara counties equalled 461,000 persons in June of 1983. Total nonagricultural employment in the Binghamton area equalled 117,000 persons. Employment sector totals are given for upstate areas for May and June of 1983.
