Empowerment: a blue-collar perspective
Article Abstract:
Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc has set up a new employee relations system, based on the Positive Discipline and Peer Grievance Review methods, that emphasizes employee involvement. The system allows management to collaborate with blue-collar workers to take the necessary steps to improve employee relations, company commitment, and set up a structure that encourages participatory management. A committee composed substantially of the company's workforce was formed to address the issues of positive discipline, peer reviews, and communication. Crucial to the program was the holding of training sessions designed to orient supervisors about the policies formulated by the committee. Simultaneous with the implementation of policies, handouts supplying information about the program and requests for suggestions, comments, and queries were distributed.

Long-term agreements work at Philip Morris
Article Abstract:
Phillip Morris Companies Inc have achieved success by using long-term labor agreements which emphasize negotiation and allow for interest arbitration. The practices have enabled the firm to continue with stable employment and uninterrupted production. Statistics indicate that since 1979, when the first long-term agreement went into effect, 38 negotiations involving local working conditions and six negotiations related to economic issues have developed, and overall, over 84% have been resolved through collective bargaining. When interest arbitration has been introduced, a limited number of factors have been discussed. Phillip Morris supports the idea of interest arbitration when necessary because it enables the firm to share information and does not solely focus on negotiations based on the economic strengths of negotiating parties.
