Executive Compensation and Tournament Theory: Empirical Tests on Danish Data
Article Abstract:
Data collected over a four-year period concerning 2,600 executives employed by 210 Danish business firms raises some questions about the tournament theory of pay structures. Consistent relative compensation and job differentials, compressed pay structures, the number of executives, and pay dispersion and firm performance are some of the questions that can be predicted. The data predict that executive pay differentials can be an incentive for the improvement of firm performance.
