Expanding customer orientation in the HR function
Article Abstract:
The human resource (HR) function needs to demonstrate that it can add value to an organization if it is to survive in the rapidly changing business environment. This can be done by emphasizing the HR function's contribution to organizational capability. Specifically, HR people need to prove that they play a vital role in enabling not just internal customers but external customers as well. They can do this by taking the following steps: identifying important external customers, prioritizing these customers according to their strategic impact, identifying the roles these high-priority customers assume, explaining what additional roles these key customers could also assume, and developing and delivering HR products that take maximum advantage of the strategically valuable roles that these customers play in an organization's business activities.

Hybrid organization structures: a path to cost savings and customer responsiveness
Article Abstract:
A number of corporations have adopted the hybrid type of organization to reduce their costs while improving customer responsiveness. This innovative structure combines the competitive features of customer focus and flexibility, which are the hallmarks of small companies, with the equally competitive features of wise use of economies of scale, which are the trademarks of large companies. This type of structure involves the decentralization of decisionmaking to the operating units and the centralization of administrative tasks to the corporate staffs. A study of hybrid corporations reveals that they have similarities in terms of the role of top management, the commitment to speed and flexibility, and the role of the corporate staffs. Steps taken to become a hybrid corporation are discussed.
