George Armstrong: director general, IPM
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) has appointed organizational change expert George Armstrong to become its new director general. The appointment reflects IPM's concern over the need to reorient its structure to make it more effective both as a professional institute and as a voice speaking for the profession on the national stage. Armstrong is a former board-level personnel director at BL Cars, Standard Chartered and the MB Group who has served as chairman of the CBI's employment policy committee since 1987. He rejects narrow definitions of personnel management and considers the key role of a modern personnel department to be the development of people resources as a source of competitive advantage. Thus, Armstrong believes that the IPM should strengthen its professional education programs to ensure that members are able to continuously improve their standards.

Stuart Chandler: general manager, human resources and strategic development, National Westminster Bank
Article Abstract:
Stuart Chandler was originally the general manager of the group personnel division of the National Westminster Bank before he transformed that position into a more extensive and more strategic one in just one month. His shift to the status of general manager of both human resources (HR) and strategic development was part of the bank's initiatives for decentralization and delayering as it concentrates on its core competencies. Chandler will handle such HR concerns as employment policy, management development and training. On the strategic aspect of his work, he will take care of technology, and internal and external communications. Chandler believes that a true HR function supports line managers while ensuring that the needs of their subordinates are appropriately addressed.

George Bain
Article Abstract:
London Business School Principal George Bain has had a variety of experiences in the field of industrial relations. Previously he worked for the Warwick Business School in industrial relations, and established a range of novel MBA degrees, including part-time degree programs. Currently Bain is interested in the development of MBA degrees. He believes that standards should be maintained, but that there should be a variety of ways to obtain degrees. One reason he enjoys working at the London Business School is because the school promotes an international outlook, an element that many comparable schools in the US lack.
