HRIS models for staffing
Article Abstract:
Computer models can predict work force effects of company cutbacks. These models help identify employees who will, or are likely to, lose their jobs. The steps involved in modeling include: defining variables in the old and new organization; defining old and new labor variables such as union contracts; defining other salient variables such as work force composition by sex, race, seniority, and other traits; and converting person-hours into a consistent variable. The model must be purged of simple errors, and extraneous, repetitious, or unnecessary data. This information is then applied to another module containing work force reduction figures, employee data, cutback objectives in monetary terms, and desired new work force levels. The software is then tested and refined. The results obtained, if undesirable, can be rerun using different modeling assumptions.

Optimal interface with an HRIS
Article Abstract:
Personnel management is becoming increasingly computerized, and personnel professionals need to make sure their human resources information systems (HRIS) are designed with interfaces that are easy to understand and use. To accomplish this goal, personnel professionals should be aware of the elements included in user interfaces. In addition, personnel professionals need to address a variety of issues, including: developing menus used in an HRIS which fit the needs of personnel; ensuring that software designs support the function of display screens; ensuring that the software connects various screens in order to facilitate the development of user-directed display screens; and ensuring that intelligence controls are established to monitor user interactions.
