Devising a sexual harassment policy
Article Abstract:
The European Commission (EC) expects to issue its code of conduct on sexual harassment on Jul 1, 1991, and preventing sexual harassment has become a priority for personnel managers. The EC's definition of sexual harassment includes any unwanted physical, verbal, or non-verbal conduct, and conduct that ridicules or intimidates employees on the basis of their sex. Organizations should promptly stop sexual harassment after it is identified, ensure that possibly offensive material is not displayed, and explain to employees that sexual harassment is not acceptable. Employees who are victims of sexual harassment should be able to seek counseling, and offenders should be disciplined. Managers and supervisors should be trained so that the sexual harassment policy is implemented effectively.

The search for strategic HRM
Article Abstract:
Strategic human resource management (HRM) attempts to make an organization's structure and the motivation and commitment of the organization's members congruent with achieving the organization's goals. Business strategies are declarations of intent to define the direction a business must move in to achieve a competitive advantage. Business strategies define the mission of the organization, delineate the expectations of its owners, manage change, capitalize on the competencies of the organization, and add value through the effective utilization of resources. Three examples of UK organizations with successful strategic HRM policies, Thorn EMI, Book CLub Associates, and the Royal Society for Mentally Handicapped Children and Adults, are presented.
