Learning-style theories
Article Abstract:
There are a number of theories have been proposed that attempt to explain how individuals learn. The 'whole-brain' theories of learning postulate that the two hemispheres of the brain have different functions, the right for creative thinking and the emotions, and the left for logical thinking and reasoning. The 'neurolinguistic programming' theory proposes that individuals have their own desired way of learning and communicating. The 'seven intelligences' theory suggests that people have seven areas of abilities: verbal, musical, visual-spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, kinesthetic and sequential-linear. Kolb's 'experiential learning' theory proposes that man go through four learning stages that require the abilities of concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization and active experimentation. The 'Color Code' theory divides personality types according to four motivators: power, intimacy, peace and fun.

Global payroll - a taxing problem
Article Abstract:
Planning for the tax considerations of overseas employees would require applying the appropriate tax reimbursement method - current-year gross-up method or one-year roll-over method - based on the tax rates in the foreign country, applicability of the method in the foreign jurisdiction, and the employee compensation level. The effects of double taxation as a result of expatriation may be reduced through tax credits and through two common types of income tax policies - tax equalization and tax protection. Tax equalization is useful in low- or non-existent tax cases and allows for availing of the tax exclusion of $70,000. Tax protection is useful, on the other hand, for attracting personnel to overseas assignments that are not so desirable. Written tax policy statements should be dealt with before employees are sent overseas. Tax planning should involve the compensation's character, timing and source.

Global outlook brings good things to GE Medical
Article Abstract:
General Electric Co's GE Medical Systems (GEMS) saw the need to adopt a global outlook in its human resources management in view of the company's extensive overseas operations. It created the Global Leadership Program (GLP) with the purpose of helping the company's key managers worldwide to develop team spirit and cultural sensitivity. Participants of the GLP were asked to undergo team-building exercises, brainstorming sessions on global business issues, as well as recreational team-training activities. The program helped GEMS raise its non-US business revenue to more than 40% of the company's overall revenue in 1992 from just 13% seven years before. GEMS's Global Leadership Program is the recipient of Personnel Journal's 1992 Optimas Award for Global Outlook.
