Marriott's family matters
Article Abstract:
Marriott Corp has addressed family issues in the workplace and improved the quality of life of the employees and their children through the various programs of its Department of Work and Family Life. Through a nationwide survey, the company determined the needs of its workforce, of which more than half are women, and discovered how strongly child-related issues affected its labor supply. In response to these family concerns, the company has designed and implemented several programs, these are: Child Care Choices, its core program, Child Care Discount Program, Family Care Spending Account, Elder Care, Work and Family Seminars, a quarterly newsletter 'The Balance,' and the Child Development Center. The company is in the process of developing a work and family line supervisory training. This will be integrated with entry-level management training and will focus on maximizing the work force.

McDonald's links franchisees to the community
Article Abstract:
McDonald's Corp's commitment to community development spared the chain of restaurants from destruction during the 1992 riots in South Central Los Angeles. The company has about 30 restaurants in the area, but not one of them suffered from anything worse than a broken glass. It was because it is McDonald's corporate policy to become actively involved in community affairs. Founder Ray Kroc demanded that all McDonald restaurants reflect the diversity of the communities in which they operate. To achieve this end, the firm's Hamburger University conducts diversity training seminars to its franchisees and gives them a wide variety of tools that store operators can use for their local community projects. A number of McDonald's restaurants provide schools with training information, nutritional information and Ronald McDonald shows on safety.

Flexibility comes out of flux
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of companies are offering flexible work arrangements to their employees. In the past, alternative work schedules and workplaces were primarily targeted at working women who need to take care of their young children. This has changed, however, because all types of workers can now avail of these innovative work structures. Moreover, these arrangements are no longer being offered just for benevolent concerns but also for business reasons. Flexible work structures have been found to improve productivity, lower turnover and decrease employee stress. The think tank known as Catalyst released on Feb. 1996 a report detailing the success of pioneering companies in implementing flexible work arrangements. Two of these companies are Bank of Montreal and Price Waterhouse. Their alternative work schemes are discussed.
