Mixed signals breed mistrust
Article Abstract:
Good employer-employee relations depend on clear communications and consistency between actions and words. Beyond official communication tools such as publications and memoranda, corporate messages are also conveyed indirectly through the news media. Management breeds mistrust by sending different messages to different audiences. A survey of 3,000 employees at one major corporation revealed five elements of trust: openness, consistency, employee autonomy, feedback, and a mutual understanding of job responsibilities and management expectations. Management can avoid the dangers of mixed messages through systematic review of messages, planning lateral communications, maintaining cooperation at all organizational levels, encouraging open communication, opting for face-to-face meetings over memoranda, and allowing time for change and growth.
