International management development and the balance between generalism and professionalism
Article Abstract:
Management development varies between cultures: the Anglo-Saxon and Latin countries typically favor a generalist approach to management, in which a manager is exposed to a wide variety of situations, while the Germans favor a traditional, tightly-focused, functional approach in which a manager is apprenticed to the organization, rising from lower levels through the hierarchy, in which direct contact with other departments is discouraged. Both the generalist and the functional approach have inadequacies. Management research indicates that a layered approach to management development which combines aspects of both approaches, general management education with technical and functional professionalism, is the best approach to management development. Seven steps to creating a layered approach to management development are presented.

The managerial menopause
Article Abstract:
There is wide concern that a majority of managers who work will not qualify for career promotions. If most managers and executives work in hierarchical structures, shaped like pyramids, than the top jobs must be filled by a minority of the qualified candidates. Step by step up the employment ladder, careers come to a standstill, and the managers lose ambition.
