New partners in business
Article Abstract:
The continuing erosion of the quality of public education and the increasing mediocrity of the skills possessed by high school graduates demand that the business community become involved in business-education partnerships designed to improve the quality of the educational system and provide an ample supply of skilled workers for future jobs in an increasingly competitive global economy. Most corporate contributions to education have traditionally gone to higher institutions, but business leaders have begun to realize that more money must be spent on pre-college education. After short-term financial goals of business-education partnerships are reached, human resources professionals will play a key role in preserving the long-term goals of effective communications between involved parties and the maintenance of the partnerships. The business-education partnerships of six organizations are presented as examples of successful programs.

Capital's expenditures
Article Abstract:
Capital Holding Corp significantly enhanced its home-state recruiting efforts in an ever-tightening labor market and improved the quality of education in Jefferson County, KY by committing millions of dollars to learning programs in local schools. The centerpiece of Capital's efforts is Project Business, a school-business partnership providing Capital with a direct link to students with an interest in business, which gives students a chance to develop work skills and to consider attending college. The Project Business program includes classes taught by both school faculty and company staff in economics, business communications and computer skills, and government and politics. Each student is given a six-week salaried summer job. A four-year scholarship is awarded to one student every year.

Sexual harassment after the Thomas hearings
Article Abstract:
The publicity generated by the Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill case has made many companies review, revise and re-establish their sexual harassment policies. Human resources professionals are working towards educating employees on the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace to deal with the confusion and concern, especially among male employees, created by the Thomas-Hill hearings . New sexual harassment policies or procedures that firms plan to implement should have input from employees, be immediately communicated to organizational members, and be implemented by trained personnel.
