On executive succession: a conversation with Lester B. Korn
Article Abstract:
A major factor in changing the nature of the executive recruiting industry was the entry in 1969 of Korn-Ferry International. Korn-Ferry innovations included the creation of specialty practice groups that focused on recruiting in particular industries, their computerized database containing background data on possible job candidates, and their global network of offices. Lester B. Korn, chairman and CEO of Korn-Ferry, discusses the need for effective executive assessment and succession systems and the role which executive search firms can play in succession planning. He also discusses the human resource function, some typical mistakes human resource managers make in succession planning, and the collaboration between the human resource function and an executive search firm. Korn speculates about the future of the executive search industry.

Heroes in collision: chief executive retirement and the parade of future leaders
Article Abstract:
The impact of a leader's departure is examined by considering three sets of tensions: those within the leader, those through generations of leaders, and those between leaders and their constituents. Each of these tensions are examined - in the personal retirement dilemma, the succession struggle across generations, and the community's need for a smooth transition between leaders. At each of these levels, there is an underlying tension arising out of the need to balance justice for older leaders, the ambitions of younger leaders, and communities' needs for a leadership portfolio.
