Open for business
Article Abstract:
Great Britain's Open College (OC) opened in Sep 1987 to provide vocational training and education on a large scale. OC offers courses at a variety of levels and subject areas, including business-management, basic skills, industry-technology, training for trainers, practical skills, in-and-out-of-work, and 'getting started'. Major firms such as British Steel, ICI, and Jaguar are planning to host OC in-house. OC expects 20,0000 firm-based students and 30,000 individual students during its first year of operations. Discounts will be offered to employers operating in-house centers. OC operations can be tailored to employer needs. Employers may join OC through membership 'schemes'.

Visions of the future
Article Abstract:
The UK must invest in human resources to remain competitive internationally. Polytechnic of Central London's Future of Work Research Group conducted interviews with policy makers from the past, a special interest group, and practicing managers. The interviewees generally agreed that the UK has concentrated on production at the expense of investment and modernization, and that the UK should place a greater emphasis on training and education. A comprehensive training program to improve skills depends on support from the government.
