Masterminding group moves
Article Abstract:
Group relocation of employees is expected to emerge as one of the most challenging responsibilities of personnel managers in the near future. In the age of downsizing, a need for lower costs and efficiencies, and access to more sophisticated technology, group relocation of employees is becoming a common practice in Corporate America. Personnel managers of companies undertaking this initiative should plan way ahead of the scheduled relocation to make the transition as smooth as possible. Moreover, they should create enhanced group benefits and introduce transferring employees to local service providers at the destination city. In addition, personnel managers should involve employees to make it easier for them to adjust to the new location. The relocation strategies of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., American Psychological Assn. and Sears, Roebuck and Co. are discussed.

Furnishing a new lease on the future
Article Abstract:
Ann K. Pehle is the first ever human resources director of Arcorp Inc., the parent company for Shastar Rent-To-Own stores and other retail/manufacturing enterprises. Before her arrival in 1994, the company did not even have a human resources department. The former HR consultant took it as a challenge and went about developing an HR department that would effectively function in the rent-to-own industry. Pehle contributed to the articulation of the mission and value statements of Shastar. She also hired three staffers to help her out in the department. In addition, she supervised the installation of the first human resources management system in the company and introduced formal recruitment and training functions. The result is a company that has the control and flexibility it needs to succeed in its industry.
