Personnel Journal 100: the year's toughest challenges - and the HR pros who tackled them
Article Abstract:
The human resources profession addressed a number of issues in 1995. Foremost of these are the changes that are transforming the structure of the workplace, such as the technological revolution, telecommuting and formation of virtual offices, all compelling human resources professionals to hone their ability to manage change. Another important issue is the empowerment of the workforce in a time when trusting employees can still result in big losses, as the Barings Bank clearly demonstrates. Diversity issues are likewise on the fore of human resources practice, which is made more difficult to handle given that harassment and discrimination still exist in the workplace. Finally, the O.J. Simpson drama in 1995 brought to light the issue of domestic violence, motivating employers to enforce policies aimed at reducing violence at home. A list of top 100 human resources directors is presented.

Can't get this big without HR deluxe
Article Abstract:
HR management plays a very important role in the global success of the fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's. Guided by the belief that its employees are a critical asset, the company has instituted a people plan that ensures the quality of its workers, the effective management of its personnel, the provision of opportunities for its employees and the motivation of its workforce. This people plan covers the different HR functions, from recruiting to training, from global expansion to diversity management. As a result of its HR focus, the Personnel Journal magazine confers to McDonald's the General Excellence Optimas award. This means that the company excels in six categories: competitive advantage, quality of life, partnership, financial impact, innovation and global outlook.
