Procedures and third parties
Article Abstract:
Procedural reforms in industrial relations in the 1970s and 1980s since the Donovan Commission are reviewed. The Donovan Commission's suggested reforms are surveyed, together with procedures for disputed conditions and pay, health and safety, grievance and disciplinary procedures, and third parties' roles in the 1970s and 1980s. Third parties had less of a role in the 1980s when changes were usually dictated as opposed to mediated. Collective bargaining covered fewer employees, with fewer unions being recognised in the workplace. Industrial relation difficulties and economic problems in the 1970s hid progress in procedural reforms from the public.

Evading Surveillance and Making Time: an Ethnographic View of the Japanese Factory Floor in Britain
Article Abstract:
Alteration or circumvention of managerial dictates can enhance production in certain cases. Studies of Japanese manufacturing plants in Great Britain show that fiddles, or the adjustment of rules or operating procedures based on employees' workplace knowledge, contribute to production targets by improving employee morale and sense of control. Although it thwarts management policy, fiddle activity ultimately does not conflict with managerial interests.
