Profits, pain, and pillows: Hotels and housekeepers in San Diego
Article Abstract:
Globalization is contributing to rising employment and a trade surplus in the US tourism industry, but increasing amenities and new work regimes are causing deteriorating conditions for several workers. Management interviews, analysis of government data, and a worker survey are used to provide a complete picture of the living and working conditions of hotel room cleaners, known as housekeepers, in San Diego and nationally.

The author investigates how city governments, specifically those in California, perceive and approach day laborers. The article examines police response, which often includes arrests based on fraudulent charges, harassment or excessive use of force.
